Resizing

In this tutorial we will learn how to resize a graphic without losing much detail.

We all have had graphics we would like to share with the our groups that are huge. If you optimize a JPG too much you lose resoulution and its no good for tubing ect. If you just resize a picture it has a tendancy to look blury.

The trick is to make a picture small enough to work with that still looks clear and crisp.

Open a large picture that you would like to resized In PSP. If you don't have one you can download one that I have provided here. Just Right click and save target as.

First step is to resize.

Use the settings shown here. Resize %age depends on the finished size you would like your graphic to be. On the graphic Provided 60% works best.

Go to Effects, Sharpen, Sharpen ....
Depending on the picture and the amount of resizing involved you may need to use "Sharpen More" or both try it out on different graphics, if it sharpens too much just hit the undo button and use a different combination. Using "Sharpen More" equal using "Sharpen" 3 times.

If you are having trouble getting the correct amount of clarity and resolution try using the "Unsharp Mask" instead, it gives you a little more control. Just play with the dial untill you get the picture looking close to the way it was before you resized it.

(you don't have to use the settings shown here ... find the settings that work best with your graphic.

Once you have sharpened your graphic you are ready to save. DONOT hit the save button! If you do you will end up using the default compression values for JPGs. You don't want to compress the graphic or you will lose all the resolution that you just gained.

Instead go to File, Save Copy As

I use Save Copy As so I can keep the original file intact but you can use Save As as well. After naming your file and chosing JPEG-JFIF Compliant Click on the Options button.

Set the compression to 1 which is the lowest setting available. and hit OK

Now save your graphic.

Your results should look something like this if you used the graphic I Provied
